Thanks so much for checking out the site!

My name is Derek Lewis, and I am honored to have been elected to serve on the Greenville County School Board (Area 24- first elected 2014). My wife, Hedrick Patrick Lewis, and I have a 3-year old son, William. Hedrick and I met at YMCA Camp Greenville and have been married for seven years. We are active members of Christ Church Episcopal and serve with numerous non profit and community agencies.

I am the Executive Director of Greenville First Steps, a local non-profit that helps build collaborative partnerships with businesses, churches, schools, non-profits and neighborhoods to ensure parents have the supports they need to be their child’s first and most important teacher, and to ensure children enter school on track and ready to succeed. You can learn more about First Steps by visiting the website. Our work in building community collaborations has been nationally recognized, including Read Greenville, a community wide effort to improve access to books for children with young families and the Palmetto Shared Services Alliance, an effort to help Childcare, Afterschool and Non Profits save money through shared buying power and shared resources.

I bring over 15 years of non-profit experience. I understand what it takes to build budgets that rely on the financial support of others, and i know what it means to be a good steward of other people’s investments. Last year, Greenville First Steps leveraged $1.50 for every dollar allocated to us.

I am serving on Greenville County School Board so that I can help provide leadership in coordinating community wide efforts to support teachers, schools, and families to build a collaborative approach to education. I want to continue supporting School Improvement Councils, PTAs, Administrators and Teachers in their efforts to strengthen our local schools.

I am a strong supporter of high-quality public schools. My mother is a retired 8th grade math teacher. My wife, Hedrick, is a former public school teacher. Her mother is a retired Greenville County School District teacher. I have served on SICs for Greenville High School, Bell’s Crossing, and on the inaugural AJ Whittenberg’s Community Engagement planning team.

I also have a great deal statewide public policy and advocacy experience. I am currently serving as one of Gov. Haley’s appointees to the SC Joint Citizens and Legislative Committee on Children, along with Sen. Mike Fair and Sen. Brad Hutto. I am a graduate of the SC SIC Education Policy Fellows  program. I also serve on the SC Association of Non Profit Organizations (SCANPO) Board of Directors.

Hedrick and I have been longtime, active members of this community. I currently serve on a variety of organization boards and committee including:

SCANPO (SC Association of Non Profit Organizations) Board member

Sunday School teacher at Christ Church Episcopal

United Way of Greenville Community Impact Cabinet member

Vice-chair of the Greenville Chamber of Commerce Education Council.

Graduate of Leadership Greenville Class 36, and chair the LG Learning Team.

Former chair of the Greenville Chamber Non Profit Alliance

Former session member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church

Former board member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School

Former board member of YWCA of Greenville
